Version 7 of the BRCGS standard for packaging materials comes into force on April 28, 2025. The standard is then also aimed at manufacturers of product packaging that produce hygienically sensitive consumer goods such as cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and disposable items. Version 7 sets out the development of a strong product safety culture and introduces new requirements for allergen management and the control of outsourced processes.
Companies that produce packaging for hygienically sensitive consumer goods must implement a range of requirements aimed at product safety and quality. These include comprehensive risk assessments and hazard analyses to identify and minimize potential risks in packaging production, as well as a robust quality management system to ensure compliance with and continuous improvement of regulatory requirements. Strict hygiene and safety protocols must also be established to prevent contamination of packaging. All materials used must be fully traceable in order to be able to react quickly in the event of a problem. "Packaging is often less of a focus than the actual product, but plays a crucial role in safety and quality along the entire supply chain. Especially for hygienically sensitive consumer goods such as food, cosmetics or pharmaceuticals, safe packaging solutions are essential to ensure that consumers are protected and the highest standards are met," says Oliver Eck, Senior Vice President Food International and responsible for certifications in the food industry at TÜV NORD. He welcomes the decision, knowing that new mandatory processes mean additional work for companies in the first step. "The BRCGS standard is internationally recognized and is used by many large retailers.
In order to meet the upcoming requirements, companies should develop strategies to create a solid security awareness within the company. Existing processes must be adapted to include the requirements for hazard analysis and risk assessment. “The standard promotes sustainable practices and can help to increase operational efficiency by establishing clear processes and controls,” says Oliver Eck.
The BRCGS standard for packaging materials, originally known as the BRC (British Retail Consortium) Global Standard for Packaging, was first introduced in 2001. It was developed to ensure the safety and quality of packaging materials used in the food and beverage industry. The standard is part of a series of BRCGS standards that focus on various aspects of food safety and quality.
