H2 readiness: New TÜV NORD seal shows suitability for hydrogen

8. July 2024 | Certification: Seal proves that projects or products can use hydrogen in the future

The global energy transition has gathered pace in recent years and intensified the search for environmentally friendly alternatives to fossil fuels. In this context, hydrogen has gained considerable importance as a potential energy carrier. With its ability to store and transport clean energy, hydrogen opens up new perspectives for a sustainable energy supply. TÜV NORD presented a new seal for H2 readiness.

H2 readiness indicates whether products can be used safely and efficiently with hydrogen as an energy carrier. This can mean, for example, that materials or components must be corrosion-resistant to enable the use of hydrogen. Or that appropriate sensors and safety devices are installed to minimize potential risks when handling hydrogen.

With the TÜV NORD H2 readiness seal, manufacturers and operating companies in various industrial sectors can document that their plans, projects and products are suitable for use in hydrogen applications. This includes the production, e.g. by electrolysis or steam reforming, as well as the storage of H2 in pressure vessels or underground compressed gas storage facilities. The auditors also examine the safety of transport routes by ship, truck or pipeline as well as the use of hydrogen in fuel cells, heating systems, filling stations or cogeneration. This enables operators or manufacturers to provide proof that all necessary requirements have been fulfilled. The TÜV NORD H2 Readiness Seal includes the certification program for electrolysers developed by TÜV NORD CERT in accordance with ISO 22734 (2006/42/EC Machinery Directive). "Transparent verification and certification are essential for the expansion of the hydrogen economy," says Andela Vukoje from TÜV NORD CERT.
