IT and functional safety at the heart of Industry 4.0

03.11.2015: From 24 to 26 November 2015, TÜV NORD, TÜViT and their cooperation partner MESCO Engineering will be showcasing consulting, development, testing and certification services for the efficient realisation of Industry 4.0 technologies at the trade fair for electrical automation, SPS IPC Drives, in Nuremberg.

Digitisation continues to advance in the industrial sector. The Industry 4.0 future project promises to deliver optimised and customised production. Industrial communication, modular automation, IT security and functional safety are essential conditions for its realisation. From 24 to 26 November 2015, TÜV NORD, TÜViT and their cooperation partner MESCO Engineering will be showcasing consulting, development, testing and certification services for the efficient realisation of Industry 4.0 technologies at the trade fair for electrical automation, SPS IPC Drives, in Nuremberg.

The idea behind Industry 4.0 is that “smart factories” will arise with ever higher levels of automation. These will be confronted with various challenges. TÜV NORD has identified two areas of risk which will need to be addressed. “On the one hand we are seeing an increasing demand for effective IT security measures to protect systems and products from unauthorised external attacks. On the other, the functional safety of systems and products continues to play an important role. In both areas we’re working closely with our customers to bring about a high level of protection,” explains Peter Baum, product manager for functional safety at TÜV NORD.

Preventing cyber attacks

The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) classifies the threat to German industry from cyber attacks as critical. Cyber and hacker attacks are a growing threat to industry and can cause damage to property and personal injury and adversely affect the image of companies. According to the findings of TÜViT, protective measures are still all too rare in practice. In order to reduce these risks in the long term, TÜViT's experts carry out extensive analyses, identify threats and derive appropriate protection targets and defensive measures.

Managing technical risks

To ensure the smooth running of networked and automated systems and, consequently, to guarantee security, TÜV NORD offers process audits as well as tests of concepts and designs. With targeted training which focuses on functional safety, the service provider is supporting industrial companies in the development of reliable and safe product and system solutions. The internationally recognised certificates from TÜV NORD attest to their high level of safety quality. “The earlier companies switch over to the new, more complex systems, the more efficiently and safely these will do their work,” says Baum by way of clarification.

Reducing development costs

MESCO Engineering offers industrial hardware and software development for OEMs in the factory and process automation field. The service provider deploys its own IEC-61508-compliant safety design packages for its customers with the aim of developing functionally safe products more quickly and at a lower cost and, in cooperation with TÜV NORD, in order to significantly reduce certification costs.

Trade fair for electrical automation

TÜV NORD is joining forces at this year's SPS IPC Drives trade fair with cooperation partner MESCO Engineering to showcase its services on a joint stand in Hall 2, stand 161. The two companies bring together a wide range of technologies and services for the fourth industrial revolution.
