In an ageing society, there is an increasing requirement for medical technology such as scanners, X-ray machines and radiographic treatment machines. TÜV NORD is aware of this growth market and has now acquired 60 per cent of Spanish family firm ACPRO (Asesoría y Control en Protección Radiológica). The company, based in Barcelona, tests X-ray machines and machinery used in nuclear medicine, and also trains personnel specialising in radiation protection.
“Through acquisition of a shareholding in ACPRO, we are strengthening the presence of TÜV NORD in Spain as whole, and also gaining access to a medical diagnosis and treatment market which offers considerable potential for complementary products and services”, says Dirk Stenkamp, Member of the Board of Management of TÜV NORD GROUP. ACPRO, established in 1990, has a staff of 25 and tests, for example, machinery and equipment used in nuclear medicine – along with the associated quality management. In addition, comprehensive training is on offer for radiation protection personnel.
“With the acquisition of shares in ACPRO, TÜV NORD is expanding its portfolio in the area of radiation protection. Among other things, TÜV NORD experts measure the radiation emitted during transportation of radioactive substances and use of such substances at the workplace, evaluates personal radiation protection measures for those who are exposed to radiation in the course of their profession, and train them according to the requirements of the Federal Radiation Protection Ordinance”, explains Frank Meissner, Head of Radiation Protection at TÜV NORD. In future he will manage the company alongside ACPRO CEO Josep Baró.
