Through acquisition of the structural engineering business of Germanischer Lloyd (GL Bautechnik), TÜV NORD is strengthening its service portfolio in the nuclear sector. GL Bautechnik, based in the Hafencity harbour area of Hamburg and up to now a part of recently-merged company DNV GL, has eight employees and specialises in fire protection for nuclear plant.
“TÜV NORD has more than 50 years experience in the area of nuclear technology. With the acquisition of GL Bautechnik, we are underlining our position as a complete service provider in this area and are therefore continuing to develop our market leading position when it comes to the decommissioning and dismantling of nuclear power plants in Germany”, explains Rudolf Wieland, Managing Director of TÜV NORD SysTec.
The experts from the former GL Bautechnik are concerned with assessments, ongoing project control and periodic inspections within supervisory and approval processes for nine nuclear plants. The clients of the company consist of four supervisory bodies of the German federal states. Even before the acquisition, TÜV NORD and GL Bautechnik worked together on various projects. “The subject of fire protection is absolutely essential during operation of a nuclear power plant, and also plays a vital role during decommissioning and dismantling”, says Wieland.
