TÜV NORD completes site specific design evaluation for Australian Goldwind windfarm

16.05.2014: TÜV NORD has presented Goldwind, the largest Chinese manufacturer of wind turbines, with a site specific design evaluation conformity statement for its Gullen Range wind farm in Australia.

TÜV NORD has presented Goldwind, the largest Chinese manufacturer of wind turbines, with a site specific design evaluation conformity statement for its Gullen Range wind farm in Australia.

Goldwind is erecting 73 wind turbines with a capacity of 165.5 MW at the Gullen Range wind farm, which is located on the Great Dividing Range between Sydney and Canberra. Both 1.5 MW and 2.5 MW Goldwind Permanent Magnet Direct Drive Wind Turbines are being utilised at Gullen Range wind farm. With the site specific design evaluation conformity statement, TÜV NORD, as a neutral expert, has confirmed that the wind turbines are suitable for use at the specified locations.

As many as 14 technical experts from TÜV NORD were involved in this one-year project, dealing with aspects such as evaluation of site conditions, soil survey, load assumptions, electrical conditions and components, rotor blades, tower and machinery components. Measured wind data for the site were used, for example, in order to calculate the loads on the turbines. The results of borings and soil examinations also provided information which is essential when considering the turbine foundations and stability. The conditions for connection to the power grid were also an important factor.

Investors in wind parks require the conformity statement, which is issued in form of a certificate, in order to be sure that the turbines are suitable for the selected site and also that they will be safe in operation.

“The close cooperation we enjoyed with those involved in the project in China, Germany and Australia was very positive indeed. We are delighted to provide Goldwind with this first site specific design evaluation”, said Michael Dahm, Head of Wind Energy at TÜV NORD, when presenting the certificate in Shanghai.

“Goldwind appreciates the professional approach taken by the TÜV NORD team in completing this work and we also recognise the support of our partner Vensys” said Pan Weiping, Vice general manager of Goldwind R&D.
