TÜV NORD has received an order from Dong Energy to monitor commissioning of the offshore wind farm Borkum Riffgrund 1. Experts will test the function of the wind turbines on site - in particular their safety systems. TÜV NORD will also issue the project certificate at the end of the commissioning process – which is the prerequisite for regular operation.
The BSH (Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency) specifies that offshore wind farms have to be monitored by an independent certifier during commissioning. Two TÜV NORD experts will support the team from Dong Energy at sea for around three to four weeks as from the end of April. The focus will be on the safety systems of all 78 wind turbines. These ensure, for example, that the pitch systems of the rotor blades turn reliably and safely out of the wind at extreme wind speeds in order to protect the turbine and the environment against damage.
As soon as commissioning is complete and the certificates of conformity are present for all the build phases of the wind farm, TÜV NORD will subject all the documents to a last review. Following completion of this review, the final project certificate will be issued for Borkum Riffgrund 1, which can then be used to apply for final operational release from BSH.
The wind farm Borkum Riffgrund 1 is located around 54 kilometres from the mainland and 37 kilometres from the island of Borkum. There are 78 turbines in total, and the remainder of these will be erected in the coming months. With a total output of 312 MW, they will then supply the equivalent of 320,000 households in Germany with green energy. The wind farm belongs to the Danish company Dong Energy, along with investors Kirkbi Invest and William Demant Invest. Dong Energy is responsible for construction and operation.
